Hmm, when I saw this I kept thinking of Tom's Midnight Garden. Miyazaki is a genius, but with the exception of material he has gathered from his own life experiences a lot of his other work are adaptations from well known sources that have been twisted about in Miyazaki style. This story is an adaptation and like many of Miyazaki's stories has a spooky feel about it. This one though may have taken source material from the 1950's classic children's story without giving it credit. That being said it is beautifully drawn and the voices are well suited for the story. At times the narrative seems to wander and gets to the point where you feel things could have been tightened up and the whole movie shortened. It still pulls the usual Miyazaki emotional strings and is certainly worth seeing.
