An ordinary civil war drama that began with a horrific scene but immediately turned into a backwoods home invasion story with a long boring setup near the end of the Civil War. BTW, the Sherman March was certainly not a directive to the "bummers" to rape or murder southern civilians, see "Quotes." And the heinous ordeal of the young slave was not at all uncommon, depicted in numerous present and past books and films, not to mention the still widely spread human trafficking trade. Chop off half of the first 40 minutes or so would make it a much better movie in mho.
