This film offers a glimmer of hope that a critical mass of Americans may advance to the point that, after all these decades, they can finally think about and discuss the Civil War as mature, rational adults. This would be a vast improvement over the simple-minded, dualistic, false narrative that plagues contemporary discourse on the subject. Although it unfortunately appears to play to the ill-founded stereotype that slave ownership was widespread in the antebellum South this film is a brave, yet tenuous step in a positive direction.
