Though I'm the daughter of a WWII veteran, I had never heard about bride ships. Everywhere Allied forces served, soldiers married local women. At the end of the war, all those brides needed transport to be reunited with their new (and foreign) husbands. "Ship of Brides" tells the story of 4 Australian women who were among 650 sent to their new homes in England on an aircraft carrier. Their circumstances differed, but they are all touched in some way by the experience of travelling in an all-men's world. Moyes works her usual magic in intertwining different themes and characters. This is a great, big, delicious read that would be equally perfect for the beach or in front of a fireplace.
