Nothing better than a Malla Nunn novel. These must be read in order!
Injured, shell-shocked, and carrying the weight of all the men who died beside him during the great war, this man joins the police shortly before he is labeled Non-white by apartheid. By the time you get to this (the fourth installment) you will be heavily invested in all the three leading men. Historical fiction, but not tedious. I want to say it is a police-non-procedural, but that is not a real category. Nunn always gives us bad guys to hate, a clear picture of what the apartheid laws did to families, and a good mystery to unravel.
