This recent release of the 1954 crime drama is notable for the opportunity it gave Asia actors the chance to play serious, realistic characters in a film about crime and murder in Hawaii. The ending, IMHO, is totally unbelievable, but this is the kind of ending demanded by Hollywood, the Hays Code, and most likely the majority of the viewing audience. I wonder how the Southern states received this film with integrated races. The film seemed to me like a grade C Casablanca. The one somewhat comical Asian seemed like a poor man's Peter Lorre from The Maltese Falcon.
