Based on historical events, this suspenseful thriller examines the infamous 1969 death of Mary Jo Kopechne, who drowned after Senator Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, and the moral and legal complexities that play out over the following week.

Set during the summer of 1969 – two events occurred almost simultaneously – the drama of the first Apollo moon landing, and Ted Kennedy’s car crash at Chappaquiddick Pond that resulted in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. The moon landing was a Triumph; while the word Chappaquiddick became synonymous with the word Scandal. The movie rolls the camera back to that fateful night with the focus firmly on Senator Ted Kennedy as we watch what he did and more importantly did not do. Through it all, Ted shows little remorse or concern over the dead woman, preferring to strategize with his sharky team to preserve his reputation. The film has a made-for-TV feel and look, but is still worth watching for the outstanding performances. Jason Clarke (Ted Kennedy) creates a convincing character you can fully believe is capable of walking away from a damsel in distress. After all, he is scion of the famous Kennedy clan with droves of “boiler room” girls following him like hypnotized puppies. Boston accents are very difficult to do without them sounding fake, but somehow Jason Clarke, an Aussie, nails it. A shame he did not score at least a nomination for best actor. Andria Blackman (Joan Kennedy) has a short but pitch perfect scene. Would like to see more of her.

1/2 star, I turned it off. beginning is a repetitive screeching of violins and the car crash showing the same scene over and over from the front, the back, the left side, the right side, over head, with the woman's mouth open, with it closed, with Kennedy's eyes bulging, with them half shut...just dumb filming.

The main character was self centered and such a looser. The justice system is not the same when you have money or famous clearly.

Was expecting to learn more details about this event, but was disappointed and frustrated. How did he get out of the car and not help rescue her? Did he close the car door after he exited? Roll the window back up??(sarcasm)
As other's commented, I'm amazed at how political & family status covered this up and the fact this movie was released after his death. (Possibly to protect his political career.)

While I watched this movie, I remembered the news reports of the accident. The movie showed the powerful connections Joe Kennedy Sr had and how he ruled the family, even in his diminished health. It also showed Ted Kennedy's lack of compassion for Mary Jo, his lack of integrity/honesty for his friends, co-workers and his office. Politicians were thought to be infallible leaders, which made them powerful. The local police didn't know how to handleMary Jo's death or knew the power that was working against them. It was days after Ted made the televised speech, did the police even attempt to investigate, only to find nothing.

I thought the movie was boring, the actors flat because their characters were and didn't tell all, even what was known as fact. Everything was different in 1969 but to say Ted Kennedy got away with murder because of it, could be correct. If this happened in 2019, he most likely would have faced a felony murder charge. I thought the movie was slow and didn't tell all, even what was know.

If you did not already dislike Ted Kennedy before, you certainly will after you watch this flick. He was a sick, self-centered, self-perceived victim trying to live up to the legacy of his brothers. A very weak amoral fellow.

Well told unbiased story. Its amazing what he got away with. I don't know how he lived with himself. He could have saved that girl.

***SPOILER ALERT*** The defining action/non-action:

What could you possibly be thinking? How could you let this much time go by?
-Well, did you see the police arrive at the cottage last night?
- No? Well, don't you think, if I had reported it, the police would have been there within the hour?
I guess so.
-I thought this matter had been handled. I thought I could count on you. The moment the police didn't arrive at the cottage, you should have known.
You should have known it was your responsibility to report it to the authorities.
What the hell are you talking about?
-No, you bungled this, Joey. You bungled it.
