For three years, Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on a hunt for a serial killer known as The Lizard King. He works as a long haul trucker. His prey are the "lot lizard" prostitutes who frequent truck stops. Working for the Bakken County, North Dakota, sheriff's department, Cassie has set what she believes is the perfect trap and she has lured him and his truck to a depot. Standing by ready to close the net are half a dozen undercover officers, including Cassie's fiancé, Ian. But the plan goes horribly wrong and the blame falls to Cassie. Disgraced, she loses her job and an investigation into her role is put into motion. At the same time, Kyle Westergaard, a troubled kid whom Cassie has taken under her wing, has disappeared, telling everyone he is going on a long-planned adventure. Kyle's grandmother begs Cassie to find him and she agrees -- all the while planning a new trap for The Lizard King. But Cassie is now a lone wolf. And in the same way that two streams converge into a river, Kyle's disappearance may have a more sinister meaning than anyone realizes. With no allies, no support, and only her own wits to rely on, Cassie must take down a killer who is as ruthless as he is cunning. But can she do it alone, without losing her own humanity or her own life?

Listened to on a road trip through S. Dakota and Wyoming. Kinda fun to listen to C.J. Box in the appropriate setting (or close, at least).

Cassie Dewall is growing on me and I was relieved to have the Lizard King Saga draw to a close. I felt that if it went on for one more book, I was done with it, but it had a decent enough ending.
I enjoyed the story, though it still feels darker than his other work, and has me looking at everyone cynically for a few days afterwards.

I did not like this as an audiobook. The narrator herself is not bad, but the narration of this on stressed me out. The volume of the narration shifted from very quiet to very loud from time to time (one quiet character, one loud and brash, etc.) Some of the character voices (did the narrator or Box decide to model Edie McClurg for the housewife?) were aggravating and took a while to get used to, and then, the worst part: there were parts in the book where people were yelling at each other so much that I had to shut the book off and take a break. It was like listening to two people get into a fight in front of you - especially when one character starts tearing the other one down... ugh. Rough. I'd read it in text if I had to do it over again.

Overall, I'm glad we're done with Ronald and his hijinx. Next....

I liked the main character of this series, Cassie, better than the character from his other series, Joe Pickett. But I can understand why Joe is so popular with readers in this area. Both series are set in the wild west upper mountain states and there is a lot of untamed wilderness in these books, which would appeal to many. I prefer the more character oriented Cassie Sewell series. She is dogged.

Enjoyed this read. Now intend to read the other (earlier) books in the series.

I had to keep reading into the night to see how this ended, and I wasn't disappointed.

Good plot, however the story seemed to wrap up very quickly. It seemed like Box had a deadline or something that he needed to meet even though he had story left to write.

The violence was pretty intense at times so I can't give it a 5/5 the rest of the story deserves.

Hunting a serial killer known as the Lizard King, has cost Cassie Dewell professionally.

When her son's friend Kyle goes missing and the possibility that he has been kidnapped by the serial killer her bosses think is dead, Cassie sets off to find Kyle and hopefully capture the Lizard King.

Plenty of plot twists. Another truly great read by CJ Box.

What an amazing book! The plot takes off and the action never stops. Another fantastic story from C.J.Box. Will definitely read more of his offerings.

Another great read from C.J. Box. Really enjoyed his Cassie character, and like the Joe Pickett novels, hope to read more of her exploits in the future.
