I am not sure what I think of this film. In some ways I was thinking that this was a commentary of popularity, fame and fanatical demands upon the stars that they worship, however by the ending, I did not know what the director, Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler: 2008; Black Swan: 2010; Noah: 2014), was trying to say.
There was plenty of talent here, with superb acting by Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle: 2013; Joy: 2015; Red Sparrow: 2018), the husband, played by Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men: 2007; Skyfall: 2012; Loving Pablo: 2017), the doctor, played by Ed Harris (The History of Violence: 2005; Snowpiercer: 2013; Westworld: 2016 - 2018), and his wife, Michelle Pfeiffer (I Am Sam: 2001; Dark Shadows: 2012; The Family: 2013).
This film was not a bad film, but just got too weird for me and went over the top of trying to say something that I never got the point of.
At times beautifully shot, and other times very bizarre, surreal, with graphic violence and too bizarre, that made me shake my head in doubt and confusion, wondering what was the point.
No bonus material to help with what the director was trying to do.

unusual, strange movie with interesting sound and pictures angle effects. amazing thriller movie, with twisted story that keep you on your toes until the end. Like all great mothers : " I give, i give and I give and it is never enough" Until you take it all. Great acting performance of Jennifer Lawrence.

Amazing film!!! It will pull on your every nerve and in the end you will be reduced to a bawling baby. It's an allegory on the Book of Genesis. Totally got it. Not a horror film although there are disturbing images. It will knock your socks off and make you raging.
Reflects in many ways our current society and possibly our future, and there is no hope. Obviously the director also feels that way. Here's hoping we get our butts kicked sooner rather than later so "God" can start again without Trump and his supporters. They have ruined the U.S.A. with no help on the horizon.

...Wow...
What a trip...
Not amazingly good, but not bad either. Certainly worth a watch. Much like his other films (Requiem For a Dream, Black Swan & Pi), this movie was very much in the same vein... It is like a dream, or in many ways, a nightmare. It doesn't always seem to flow smoothly, but you still understand the gist of it (much like in a dream) - like someone will have sex, and the next scene, she is fully pregnant, even though it seems to be the same day; it doesn't make a lot of logical sense, but emotionally, it flows perfectly (like in a dream) - some scenes will go from 'wait, why did she doe that' to 'huh, weird' to 'wait, what??!' to 'wow, that's pretty crazy' to 'Holy Bananas! WTF is going on??!'
So again, not amazingly exquisite, but not bad, and certainly not boring. It's worth the ride.

I watched two movies this Mother's Day weekend. What to watch: Kidnap (Halle Berry). Not to watch: Mother! But what is clear is the underlying themes of protective mode motherhood instinctively has.

LOL...what a movie. Strangely gripping for me all the way to the riotous and bloody end only to have things begin again. I'm not as harsh on JLaw as many people seem to be as she may have been the reason I kept watching this mishmash that played like someone's long nightmare. Watch at your own risk.

God and Hitler have some things in common with Him. All are men, are writers (Ten Commandments, Mein Kampf), inspire followers and believe history is going somewhere, if only around in circles. They have also left apocalytic disaster in their wake. Perhaps they have found comfort in women as well, Mary, Eva and Her.
If anyone needed assurance that a picture could be made out of this situation, they could call in comparison to 'Rosemary's Baby'. Instead of Mia, Jennifer Lawrence. I wonder what Meryl Streep made of this nauseating project.
The director is a creator. That's what he does.

Martin Scorsese on this film:

After I had a chance to see mother!, I was even more disturbed by this rush to judgment, and that's why I wanted to share my thoughts. People seemed to be out for blood, simply because the film couldn't be easily defined or interpreted or reduced to a two-word description. Is it a horror movie, or a dark comedy, or a biblical allegory, or a cautionary fable about moral and environmental devastation? Maybe a little of all of the above, but certainly not just any one of those neat categories.

Is it a picture that has to be explained? What about the experience of watching mother!? It was so tactile, so beautifully staged and acted — the subjective camera and the POV reverse angles, always in motion … the sound design, which comes at the viewer from around corners and leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare … the unfolding of the story, which very gradually becomes more and more upsetting as the film goes forward. The horror, the dark comedy, the biblical elements, the cautionary fable — they're all there, but they're elements in the total experience, which engulfs the characters and the viewers along with them. Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it.
