Sticking yourself into a movie about another culture ... just for the bucks. Mark Wahlberg, I expect better of you. The beasts are terrifying but the premise is dumb.

If you like science fiction/fantasy, this is it. Good guys, lost in a strange land, help the locals defend the great Wall against monster intruders who waken and attack every 60 years. Strong main characters, lots of action, a real fight against a formidable foe, great CGI. What's not to like. If you are looking for a true, believable movie, this is not it.

Great for Pre-Teens.

The movie “The Great Wall” is a marvellous and fascinating movie. The quaintly of this movie is absolutely outstanding, everything including the characters and background was very clear. Unlike other movies whose special effects seem very fake, “The Great Wall” has very realistic looking special effects. The colours of the movie were also very well displayed in different sections. The plot of “The Great Wall” is amazing with European travels fighting along with China’s army in order to stop the intelligent beasts from invading China. The emotion and mood which this movie expresses are fantastic with bits of sadness, anger and joy. “The Great Wall” has a very happy ending. The ending of this movie was very enjoyable as the European prisoners and China’s army had defeated the strange beasts. I believe that this movie is enjoyable for all ages, however “The Great Wall” can be terrifying for younger children as it is very graphic. Anyone who enjoys action and war-themed movies should definitely watch “The Great Wall”. 4.5/5 Stars.

I am a fan of both the lead actors. But this film is awful. Silly premise, played out in predictable manner. A total waste of time.

The days of U.S.-Chinese blockbuster film co-productions are probably already behind us. Cold War 2.0 with Russia has already been launched, and Trump has cooked up a new Cold War with China, though it was something Obama announced (his "pivot to Asia"). Based on the many reviews that panned THE GREAT WALL, I was expecting much worse. It is a decent action-adventure picture, but one basically in the Chinese vernacular. Meaning that it does its martial valor straight with no satirical chaser. We pampered Westerners prefer our blood and guts seasoned with comic asides, which is why we love DEADPOOL movies so much. Matt Damon got raked over the coals because he presented a sort of Victor Mature earnestness in his portrayal of a mercenary who discovers a higher purpose, a larger cause than personal gain. THE GREAT WALL is a warning against rampant greed. Nations can't survive against it without radical acts of heroism. American audiences can't help but feel conflicted because we've been taught for decades that greed is good.

I enjoyed this movie. It was largely lambasted by the critics, but I disagree. It is no amazing cinematic achievement for the ages... lots of CGI. But if you are a fan of the fantasy genre, then you are probably going to enjoy this movie. Matt Damon and Jing Tian are strong leads. It's a very interesting tale, a "world" you can get caught up in. I would NOT recommend this for kids younger than teenagers simply because of the gore and violence, PG13 is probably a good rating to go by, IMO. If you're hoping to see one of the great Chinese cinematic achievements, you likely will be disappointed. But you are interested in a fantasy action film with stunning visuals, a creative world and solid lead acting - you will enjoy this film.

Another movie that the kids enjoyed.
No serious intense storyline that you had to follow. Just a basic concept.
Some funny af laughs. My youngest loved the costume designs and my eldest loved the moves going on during the fight scenes.
Didn't have an issue with the acting - but I've never thought Matt Damon a very good actor anyway, so the supporting cast was better imo.
I loved how there was no massive drag on having to find out everyone's back story. It was just the 'here and now' thing.

This movie is an exercise in fantasy, with terrible acting, thin story line, and ridiculous creatures. Perfect for adolescents, which was probably the target audience.

Not as bad as I thought it could have been - thankfully - but there were some real challenges with some of the effects and I was hoping for something greater in regards to the antagonists.

Where are the Tao Tei now?
-The mountains, regrouping.
Where do they come from?
-About 20 centuries ago, there was an emperor whose greed brought deep suffering to all of China. The heavens sent the meteor that struck Gouwu Mountain, turning it green and releasing the Tao Tei. From that day on, the Tao Tei rise every 60 years to scourge the north of China. They come to remind us of what happens when greed is unchecked. They eat anything, alive or dead, and take food to their queen. She depends on her soldiers to feed her. Only with the food they provide is she able to multiply. The capital, and its two million
people, is only 800 li away. If the Tao Tei ever had that much nourishment, no corner of the world would be safe.

These men know what they're doing?
-Wrong question. Whether or not the cable is attached, that is the question.
And the answer?
-Xin ren. Xin ren means trust. To have faith. Here, in this army, we fight for more than food or money. We give our lives to something more. Xin ren is our flag. Trust in each other. In all ways, at all times.
-Well, that's all well and good, but I'm not jumping. I'm alive today because I trust no one.
A man must learn to trust before he can be trusted.
-Then you were right. We're not the same.
