I did not know this TV series existed, but I recognize it from a movie I saw in the late '60s. This series is apparently a spin-off of the movie, "Support Your Local Sheriff." It was hilarious, and I recall the movie had a great supporting cast.

I watched this series with my Mother, it was suggested by helpful library staff who noticed my Mother is a fan of James Garner. No one I have met had heard of the series before. It is quite a find. The series and the character are somewhere between Maverick and Rockford. If you like Westerns you will enjoy this a lot.

The series aired for one season in the early seventies. James Garner plays Nichols,a man who resigns his Army commission and returns to the town in Arizona named after his family,he becomes Sheriff. The setting is the early 1900’s, Cars and Morotcycles are just coming into existence, but a lot of people still used horses, the West is changing. The cast of regulars include a pre Superman Margot Kidder, John Beck who is recognizable for a lot of parts in the seventies, Neva Patterson and Stuart Margolin who plays an Angel from The Rockford Files type character.

The plots are typical Western plays, bank Robbie’s, traveling prize fighters, train robberies, ransoms, is Jesse James still alive but there is always a bit of a twist and you never really know where the story is going. Lots of guest stars, the Ricardo Montalban episode is a stand out.

I highly recommend checking this series out, if you think you have seen every Western, and haven’t seen this one. If you are a James Garner fan, this is for you. It is a very enjoyable series.
