"Captain Fantastic" is one of those films that had been hyped for me. I found while the film moved smoothly, I feel like there was something more that could've been done plot wise. For instance, I wished more attention had been paid to the backstory around Viggo Mortonsen's character and his wife. The story is ultimately about a misfit family of communist pseudo-guerrillas led by their charismatic Marxist father (played by Mortenson), trying to make it to their matriarch's funeral, while jousting with his father in-law. The movie is full of antics, it was entertaining and engaging, it just felt shallow, like it was skating over deeper plot points. It has a good ending and ultimately felt good to finish it, happy that the characters have reached their best selves.

"Captain Fantastic" surprised me. A lot better that what I was expecting. Viggo Mortensen is perfectly casted as the father. It is important to note the father character is deeply flawed, full of himself, and suffering of intellectual vanity, but also best intentions and love for his family, and Viggo delivers a very nuanced performance.
The biggest challenge was (probably) to find a strong group of actors to play the children. All of them did a good job.
The director is that actor from "Silicon Valley"?? I didn't know that.

So how does a well-Intentioned family avoid being run roughshod by consumerism, TV, video games and disaster capitalism in this day and age? Well, this family tries to live an isolated life in the Pacific Northwest and succeeds pretty well--that is, untill a tragedy forces them to reckon with modern society. A lot of soul searching and decent parents trying so hard to get it right. I loved this surprisingly deep and thoughtful film abou trying to raise strong, thinking children in a world where commercialism has run amuck. Don't let the corny cover cause you to overlook this gem.

A little stilted at times and overly sentimental.

This film is both hilarious and philosophically deep/provocative. It's something I don't recall seeing in a film before this one. About midway through the film, the novel "Lolita" is brought up...which was "interesting." In some ways, this film is a lot like that novel.

I was thoroughly impressed with this one. It was not only poignant but had me inspired. There is a lot to think about and discuss with this movie. Well done.

Loved the story, but there is a bit too much unnecessary cussing.

I put off watching this movie because it seemed weird. Now I want to watch it again and again. The story is well-written, the children are amazing, and I loved watching this dad struggle with how to raise his kids in the manner that he and his wife thought best. The a cappella version of "Sweet Child of Mine" alone is worth the price of admission.

When you have sex with a woman, be gentle and listen to her. Treat her with respect and dignity even if you don't love her. Always tell the truth. Always take the high road. Live each day like it could be your last. Drink it in. Be adventurous, be bold, but savour it. It goes fast. Don't die.
