I think this film may be fruitfully viewed as an allegory about various aspects of psycho-cultural attitudes and the "mental health" industrial complex, including the use of antidepressants, in Western society.

I found this an incredibly beautiful and powerful movie. It is to cinema as Arvo Part is to music.

A certainly too long music video.

If you can stay awake through the slow moving, unsurprising plot, "Equals" is worth seeing for the impressive futuristic world (****) produced from elegant architectural locations filmed in Singapore, in Japan (in various sites by Tadao Ando architect; on Awaji Island; and at Moa Museum of Art), and on custom-built sets backed up with rear-projection screens. The subtle acting is appropriate to the emotionless utopia set in a post-apocalyptic world, impressively produced, but leaves us feeling cold. The artistic lighting is deliberately very flat (few black tones, few highlights), often with just two color hues in a scene, to reinforce the emotionless society; but it also subdues the drama without much relief. The sound track reinforces the movie's strengths. But a meatier plot with more bursts of passion would have helped boost the film's impact. In this vein of futuristic world-building, the following movies are more dramatic: "THX 1138" (1971); "Logan's Run" (1976); "Blade Runner" (1982); "Oblivion" (2013).

Sorry, I wanted to appreciate this dystopian story, but the snail's pace and lack of acting caused me to slumber. To be fair, it's tough to fault the actors since this future society outlaws emotion and that translates to a bland, joyless film with few redeeming features. One gets the point very early, that we should appreciate love & freedom and not be afraid to enjoy our lives.

There are far better science fiction films out there re: dystopia. This movie has bad pacing, poor lighting, discordant music, faceless villains, and two primary actors who come across as forced, with little romantic chemistry. Only the ending had some interest as a moral question of what makes a human being.

Against my better judgement, I borrowed this DVD from the library, as previews make every movie look interesting. I am not a fan of Kristen Stewart and her sour puss. With that added instant drawback, needless to say, I was not overwhelmed with this one.

A science-fiction/dystopian Romeo and Juliet. I kind of hate where the movie ended.. I wanted to know what happened to Nia and Silas, but I don't even know if there will be another movie. I thought the world-building was amazing and I was completely intrigued by this society. The story moves a little slow, but I appreciated the time that was taken to immerse viewers in this world.

This is an excellent movie, but it is VERY slow-paced. You must have patience and understand the atmosphere/mood the director was creating. Not much happens at all, but that is really the point. I kept thinking "this must be what it is like to live in New York and work in an office--deathly dull. If you didn't like Moon, this might not be for you. No blood, no guns, no car chases, just a psychological drama that makes you think.

There is now complete and utter peace on Earth because no one feels anything. No touching or procreating is allowed, and "defective" children are killed at birth. Everything would be perfect, except a virus is causing people to go insane.
