The Hunt is the second book of the Cage series by author Megan Shepherd, and although I didn’t read the first novel I never once felt at a loss for anything… except words. Fast-paced, thrilling, and intelligent; The Hunt follows six humans brought together by faith as they failed in their escape from the Cages they were bound in by the Kindred. The Kindred moral code prevents them from killing Cora, Lucky, Mali, Leon, Nok and Rolf; but now they are forced into menageries to act as puppets and do whatever the uncloaked Kindred desire. Nok and Rolf are placed in an enormous dollhouse and are constantly under watch by Kindred and Serassi, and their unborn daughter Sparrow might be stolen from them and sent into a genetics lab. Cora doesn’t understand who to trust as she acts as a singer in the Hunt, surrounded by friends but constantly approached by Cassian who has betrayed her trust. Leon has been abducted by the Mosca and is only alive because the leader wants him to steal through the dangerous drecktubes. Technically, in Cora’s eyes, the humans remained caged by the Kindred; but all this could change if she takes place in the Gauntlet, a life risking test that could prove humanity’s intelligence. With her telekinesis abilities, Cora finds herself questioning what’s real and what isn’t… and if there is a chance to return to Earth at all. This book will have you holding onto your chair and eagerly rushing to grab the next one. Rating 5/5

Perfectly entertaining. The pace in The Hunt, as before, is somewhat slow with multiple POVs who are much dearer to me here than previously. I thought their personalities shone more brightly than before, and beneath the false bravado and the struggle to remain safe and alive, there was a vulnerability and, in times of need, a strong backbone and a cause, that all characters shared.
