"Why would a mother ever abandon her child? And is an abandoned child destined to grow up and make the same mistake? These were some of Melissa Cistaro's questions after her mother drove off without explanation one summer. Decades later Melissa finds herself at her dying mother's bedside with 6 days to find answers, fearful that she could do the same to her own little girl. Then she discovers a cache of letters her mother wrote but never sent and stumbles on the answers she'd been seeking. Haunting and ultimately uplifting, Pieces of My Mother is about the choices we make and their repercussions on others"--Provided by publisher.

I found this book very frustrating to read. The author explains how her mother basically abandoned her and her brothers at a young age with little explanation as to why she left. Their father is left to raise them and while he seemed to have an active role in their upbringing she doesn't give a lot of information up about her father then nor where he is now?Throughout the book the author tries to make sense of her Mum's leaving. I found it painful to read and to imagine what her and her brother's must have gone through especially since their mother would on occasion come back into their lives but failed to keep in regular contact and certainly never explained herself. I felt like the author was just looking for that one thing that would explain away everything that had happened In the past and make everything ok, unfortunately she doesn't find it.
