Detective Alex Cross and his partner, John Sampson are trying to find a kidnapper and murderer. This is the first book in this series and it is a page turner from beginning to end. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Inside the twists and turns of a serial killer. Patterson at his finest. The cinematic feature differs slightly but worth viewing for comparison.

Too many moving parts in this complicated plot. I could not suspend disbelief. Very disappointing given all the accolades.

Dr. Alex Cross, a black psychologist and police detective, and his life-long friend, John Sampson, also a detective, are investigating another brutal homicide in the projects when word comes that two young students have been kidnapped at an up-scale Washington DC private school. Why should they leave this pressing case and join forces with the FBI and the Secret Service? It's not fair, but one of the fathers is US Secretary of the Treasury and Alex reluctantly gets drawn in. And later, pushed aside. This is the first time we meet Cross, one of the great new fictional personalities introduced in the mystery - thriller field in recent years. It's a page turner, perhaps it's because author James Patterson also brings us one of the most vile criminals ever encountered, Gary Soneji. Secret Service Supervising Agent Jezzie Flanagan is not just eye candy, but in that department her relationship with Cross steams. Can you read 500 pages in one sitting?

I've always enjoyed the Alex Cross novels and thought this a good story. What is it with these authors that can only describe using the f word? I can think of several very successful ones that never have it appear in their writings. It is off putting to say the least.

This is the first book of the Alex Cross series. It was my second of Patterson's books. Great book full of suspense. Highly recommend.

My first James Patterson, and the beginning of one of his bestselling series....but I don't really get all the hype. I read it fast enough, and it's a page turner, but I find the characters mostly flat and bordering on stereotypical. The villain is the most interesting, but the interactions between the two "leads" left me with a lot of eye rolling. Good for a quick read and non-stop pacing, but if you're looking for depth or character development this just didn't cut the mustard for me. And some of the dialogue was just very over-the-top cheesy.
