This is a good book to get into Bukowski's head. Reading his letters to other writers and editors - dated from 1946 to 1993, you can see that he stayed the same person throughout his life: a loner who steadfastly refused to "sell out", to change and become a "better person". He's also remarkable in his desire to stay true to himself and to dedicate his whole life to art.
