In her extraordinary novels Into the Wilderness and Dawn on a Distant Shore, award-winning writer Sara Donati deftly captured the vast, untamed wilderness of late-eighteenth-century New York and the trials and triumphs of the Bonner family. Now Donati takes on a new and often overlooked chapter in our nation's past--and in the life of the spirited Bonners--as their oldest daughter, the brave and beautiful Hannah, comes of age with a challenge that will change her forever. Hannah has learned more about healing, and it becomes necessary when a runaway slave, close to giving birth but desperately ill, shows up on the mountain. Hannah insists on taking her in, putting the whole family in jeopardy when a bounty hunter comes looking for her. It's worse because he's her childhood friend, first love, and knows the mountain intimately. The Bonners decide to take her to the camp, location unknown to them, where runaway slaves gather in the Endless Forest. Adventures galore, as usual. The Bonners teach her as much as they can about woodscraft, so that she will be safe. This turns out to be crucial, as things go awry. The best in the series so far.
