For almost a decade, zoologist Rachel Caine has lived a solitary existence far from her estranged family in England, monitoring wolves in a remote section of Idaho as part of a wildlife recovery program. But a surprising phone call takes her back to the peat and wet light of the Lake District where she grew up. The eccentric Earl of Annerdale has a controversial scheme to reintroduce the Grey Wolf to the English countryside, and he wants Rachel to spearhead the project.

The book is not about wolves. Rather, the reintroduction of the grey wolf to Cumbria serves as background to the story of a slightly damaged zoologist who returns to her home from the US and reconnects with her brother. "Wolf Border" is perhaps an analogy for her place on the margin.

Sadly, this story came to an end. I lingered over the last pages, wanting more.
Rachel's love for the wolves and love for her son was striking. My heart ached for both.

I struggled with this book. It took me a while to figure it out. Sarah Hall's writing style is monologue & I finally realised that it appeared as indifference to me. Even with the beautiful wolves in it , it never warmed up for me.

Another fantastic book from Sarah Hall, up there with Daughters of the North, The Electric Michelangelo, and The Beautiful Indifference. Strong prose links a wildlife researcher's work restoring wolves in the wild with the struggles of her unconventional family. There's a very slight sci-fi or alternative history element here (a recent major vote gets a different result), which only helps the reader imagine different ways of relating to wildlife and the world. The last third was unexpectedly suspenseful and kept me up very late!

Simply a great read. I really enjoy books about nature and the outdoors. In this case, it's refreshing to read a novel with a very strong female as a main character doing very untraditional work.

Well-researched; spectacular diction and detail. If you love wolves, you'll enjoy this book.
