Weird movie. I could not give it a very high rating. My question to Serena would be ..... if the past is the past and our love began when we met.... why obsess about the past and destroy the future?

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper always have good chemistry together. Although grim it was an interesting movie.

Visually appealing, but it didn't do the story justice. The book stuck with me for weeks, thinking about the characters long after I'd shut the cover. The movie just didn't pull together what should have been a thrilling and tragic story.

Everything's already been laid out there: The critics panned it, and it is a very tragic drama. I didn't hate it. Jennifer Lawrence was visually stunning in (what seems to me to be) one of her more adult roles; her acting, however was rather flat.

This movie had no point to it, I still don't even know what its about.

The critics were collectively down on this one though perhaps a little harshly. Nice cinematography for this depressing period piece that has elements of a Thomas Hardy tragedy. Any fans of Jennifer Lawrence should try Winter's Bone ahead of Serena if they haven't already. No big fix so we'll give this a six.

Serena, a resourceful young woman who was orphaned since 12, in the form of beautiful Jennifer Lawrence, was determined to protect her marriage to a timber man, played by handsome Bradley Cooper. Unfortunately, their union faced a string of traumatic events that forced the couple to make choices with devastating consequences. While the period story took place in the scenic Smoky mountains, the set was filmed in Czech Republic.

Wonderful acting and story. It can be a downer type of movie.

Interesting story. What a tragedy.

Really decent movie from Magnolia/Studio Canal.

Good story, epic scenery, strong score.

Ambition/greed run amok. You reap what you sow. Well worth a viewing.

Town meeting part 1 of 2

Sheriff: Do we want our Smoky Mountains to be made a national park? Or do we want them to be made a desert?...
George: What about the jobs, Sheriff? These men need to work, don't they? And the logging camps bring in railroads and electric lines to places that never had them before. We're bringing progress to Carolina.
Sheriff: Progress? Progress for whom, Mr Pemberton? All the profits are going north.
George: Well, what is it that your park's providing? I'm sure your park will be very nice for you and your rich friends to go on a Sunday afternoon hike but for the working men, the men in this room, Sheriff,
the men unlike you, Mr Kephart, it's a matter of survival.

Town meeting part 2 of 2

Sheriff: The logging barons always cry "jobs" and "free enterprise" but the truth is, you barely pay enough to put food on the table.
George: Oh, we pay more than any job these men can get. And that's why there's a line 50-deep every time there's an opening.
Sheriff: Openings. Yes, you always have openings, don't you, Mr Pemberton? Because your camps have killed more men than the War Between the States.
George: It's dangerous work. And every logger will tell you he's proud of what he does. And I don't think he wants the government to build him a pretty park, Sheriff. I think he wants the freedom. The freedom to work hard and to better himself. That's what this country is supposed to be about, Sheriff!

I wonder if the people who gave this negative reviews watched the entire movie. It did start slow, but it's the kind of movie you need to watch and study. Everything has a meaning, which you see as the movie comes to the end. I was truly drawn into the end when the tragedy began to magnify and I couldn't turn away. This is a great character study, and everything that a good movie should be--people with motives you can understand, even if they head down a dark path. I think too many people these days like movies that don't make you think too much. Slow beginning, yes, but powerful ending.
