This was entertaining enough for me to watch the entire first season, but it's really pretty mediocre in terms of action, plot, acting, etc. It gets a little better as the season progresses, but the writing, and more advanced storylines that I've become accustomed to with many recent cable tv shows just isn't happening with The Last Ship. It's just too simple for my taste. But, having said that, I know that many people enjoy simpler shows, like NCIS or many of the police procedurals, so give it a try if you think you fall into that category.

Was looking for a good show to watch - unfortunately this is not available on Netflix.
Checked it out from the library and really enjoyed it. Reminded me in parts of The Hunt for Red October, The Walking Dead and other "virus" movies. Just a couple of cheesy parts that could be a USNavy recruitment film, but 95% enjoyable, suspenseful entertainment. And not too gory/violent!

Season 3 is in the works, so there is audience support despite of the less known cast members. Agree with pennyyimking that the characters grow on you and the plot got more interesting in the last few episodes.

Moderately good tv show, maybe inspired but the recent Ebola crisis in west Africa.

Actually there is more than one ship.

Acting is average. Story focuses on the one US Navy ship that has scientists working on the cure. But often it seems like the story is about Americans being able to do anything.

Granderson: In the 14th century, the black death wiped out 60% of the European population. The plague killed indiscriminately...the artists, scientists, thinkers, so few and precious to begin with, were wiped out. It upended the social order and prolonged the dark ages 150 years. I cannot let that happen here. I understand your allegiance to your friends. You've gone through so much together. But you've seen nothing of the chaos here at home. The hysteria, the cruelty, the savagery. You must try to see the situation from our point of view. There are people out there who would use this crisis to take what does not belong to them. They are the barbarians at the gate who would send us into a new dark age. We have the power to stop them, to keep them in their place. It is my duty to help
the right people first, the people whose survival will ensure the future of our entire society...

The virus:
Dr. Scott: Seven months ago, outside Cairo, there was an outbreak--a virus of unknown origin. Its genetic structure was like nothing any of us had ever seen. It swept throughout the village, killing everyone that it infected. Egyptian officials claimed the outbreak was contained, but it wasn't. Instead, it continued to mutate and spread. ...

CMC Jeter: I am here for a reason, as are you, as is everyone aboard this ship. … there's a... A voice inside you. Maybe it's your highest self, maybe it's the voice of God. I don't know, but... It's a voice of... hope.

Chandler: Now our duty is to the entire world On board this ship is the hope ... for our futures, for our families, and for all of humanity, because in that lab in our helo bay are the ingredients for a cure. And this is the safest place on Earth for our scientists to do their work-- on a $3 billion piece of machinery protected by 216 sailors in the US Navy Our mission now is simple. We do whatever it takes to stay alive at sea until they find that cure.

Chandler: How many immune people in the world?
Dr. Scott: Be incredibly rare, but of course they exist.

Dr. Scott: You don't know about loss because you don't care about anyone but yourself. Where the hell do you get off thinking your pain is any greater than anyone else's?

Dr. Scott: I'm sure you've all heard of the disease yellow fever. It killed millions of people all over the world. In 1937, there was a young
doctor named Max Theiler who was testing a vaccine on mice. Theiler and his coworkers attempted the use of 99 different substrains of the virus in their vaccine. But each and every time, the mice died, until finally, on the 100th attempt, they found it. I don't have the answers today, and I may not have them tomorrow. But I can promise you this... There's absolutely nothing that will stop me until I do.

Toro: Society is based on the ancient Inca system of labor exchange known as mita. Our people provide the labor. El Toro provides the infrastructure
and protection.
Chandler: Protection?
Toro: Yes, sir.
Chandler: Where we're from, we call that slavery.
