The movie itself is thin, but the songs, and the variety show with its galaxy of stars at the end is quite satisfying.

VERY GOOD 1943 war time entertainment movie (although not quite as good in my opinion as USO celebratory 'Four Jills in a Jeep' also available from KCLS).
'Thousands Cheer's dual format, mixing a first half plot with the second half terrific 'camp show' with many top stars - was a bit clumsy/slow, but the overall film caught on and was quite enjoyable.
I am now a BIG fan of Kathryn Grayson, who was charming and very beautiful, but I am a still a little turned off by the classical soprano vocal techniques - those high notes where the singers change their vocal timbre range have an annoying (for me, a musical instrumentalist) quality.
In the film second half camp show, Eleanor Powell puts on an amazing tap dance performance, and Lena Horne (in a great film sequence) sings and especially looks terrific. Both her parents apparently were a mixture of European-American, Native-American and African-American decent, so she has a fabulously mixed skin tone, facial characteristics, and more. Jose Iturbi does some of the best filmed piano playing I have seen, and does a stellar duet with Judy Garland.

If I may, let me call this classic film buried treasure. KCLS has 4 copies and only one is out with a patron. I noticed that the star rating by past reviewers went from one star to five stars. So why the fluctuation in reviews. This movie was made at the height of World War II. People back home wanted some entertainment relief,, and they got it big time with this Military Show Musical. Gene Kelly stars with a all star cast. "Thousand Cheer" because the movie is based on an in the war zone military show. Gene Kelly outdoes himself with a dance with a broom. The number is often shown when referring to his career. Don't take my word for it. Think if you were home with your son or father at war. How would you feel about the movie? Thanks for reading the above. Leave word here how you review the film.
