Lightweight but enjoyable story about a person from a place called Freedom One, where there's not much actual freedom. Of course, Nine doesn't find out about that until she washes up on the shore of a remote island where the natives still live as "savages", in family groups, monogamous couples, and having babies willy-nilly.
Of course, the super-crazy lady in charge of Freedom One is anxious to have Nine take her place in the "perfect" society and of course, Nine is balking. Like a lot of dystopian fiction, the ruling folks have a penchant for rewriting history so that it will help them out.
Kudos to Todd for the asexual orientation factor (since folks in Freedom get to choose their gender, yet neither can reproduce) and Nine's obvious insecurity with having to choose.
