By appearances, Attack on Titan looks to be a good gateway anime. It incorporates an interesting storyline any horror fan would enjoy, especially Walking Dead and zombie fans; has an assortment of likeable characters with pretty decent dubbing; and its animation is fantastically beautiful. My main criticism is that when there aren't awesome titan fights, the downtime in this show can be pretty slow and boring. Also, the main characters tend to break down in existential crises 80 percent of the time (which I suppose I would do if I were in their shoes, though it does get quite repetitive and whiney). Its hype is deserved, though I still wouldn't name it one of my favorite anime.
