Storied matchmaker and Nantucket resident Dabney Kimball has her own life and match turned upside down when her true love of twenty-seven years prior returns to the island.
"48-year-old Nantucketer Dabney Kimball Beech has always had a gift for matchmaking. Some call her ability mystical, while others - like her husband, celebrated economist John Boxmiller Beech, and her daughter, Agnes, who is clearly engaged to the wrong man - call it meddlesome, but there's no arguing with her results: With 42 happy couples to her credit and all of them still together, Dabney has never been wrong about romance. Never, that is, except in the case of herself and Clendenin Hughes, the green-eyed boy who took her heart with him long ago when he left the island to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. Now, after spending 27 years on the other side of the world, Clen is back on Nantucket, and Dabney has never felt so confused, or so alive. But when tragedy threatens her own second chance, Dabney must face the choices she's made and share painful secrets with her family. Determined to make use of her gift before it's too late, she sets out to find perfect matches for those she loves most. The Matchmaker is a heartbreaking story about losing and finding love, even as you're running out of time" - from publisher's web site.

Tagged as a great beach read, disagree. Who wants to be mad at a girl for blindly being in an abusive relationship? And then cry buckets at a sad ending? Not me.

A good beach read. Easy and predictable. Even had me crying at the end.

The book itself is pretty good, until you get to the ending. Main character regains her one true love, but then she gets pancreatic cancer and dies in the last 3 chapters. Extremely depressing ending. When you close the book at the end you just feel pretty horrible. I wouldn't recommend it just for that reason.

I loved this book. It kept me up all night reading. It was sad, but still a very good read.

Dabney has lived on Nantucket island her whole life, refusing to leave the island except for her stint in University. Known as the island matchmaker, her own marriage never fulfilled her. When her first and great love, Clen, returns to the island, Dabney must make choices. This was the first book I've read by Elin Hilderbrand. She did a great job creating the turmoil that Dabney goes through in deciding between her husband and her first love.

Vintage Hildebrand. This was a lovely
story and although you knew heartache
was pending, the author eased into a very
emotional ending, which lingers with the
reader. A wonderful read

It's an "ok" read, not elin's best book by far. Somewhat predictable. 3/5

I loved this book! It seemed a bit "frivolous" at times, however, as you get closer to the ending, it knocks you over!
As another reviewer said, "I love books that make me cry." This was a real tear jerker!! Can't remember the last time a book made me cry! Kristen Hannah books can do that sometimes.
Totally enjoyed!!
