If you like Poirot mysteries then these 4 episodes on 2 discs is right under your Christmas tree: 368 minutes of poorly lit murder scenes with no one happy. "Mrs Mcginty's Dead", has Poirot hired by the police to investigate if the convicted murderer is actually the murderer. He's been sentenced to death so the case just has a few weeks for Poirot to prove him innocent. As usual, all the people seem like they are part of a cover-up if not the real guilty one. Along the way Poirot discovers terrible secrets about all of them that they either did not know or would maybe kill to keep quiet. I"The cat among the pigeons" has Poirot ostensibly giving some kind of welcoming speech at an all-girls school and then hangs on to observe the staff for deciding who shall be the new head mistress. Ridiculous. A man around all these pubescent girls! Why not a woman? But then out comes the bad side of people, a murder or two and the usual unmasking of people cheating their way in front of the great Poirot. They shall pay the price."The third girl", stars David Suchet and Zoe Wanamaker. I guess Zoe is the replacement for Hastings, Miss Lemon, and Inspector Japp. This episode is pure Christie, right down to having a blind man making cut shots on a snooker table and shooting skeet with accuracy. Who commits suicide in a bathtub while wearing their underclothes? The plot has more twists than a Guiness Book pretzel. "Appointment with death" is rather odd. What is a overly fastidious man who walks with mincing steps and wears in the hot sun of Syria a full suit of clothes, vest included, as though he were going to attend a business meeting in London? Of course a murder occurs and Poirot investigates. "The little gray cells have begun to sing to Poirot." he says to a member of the Syrian party. The plot and characters here are nasty. When I was growing up my uncle was married to a child abuser who delighted in making life hell for those under her charge. Mrs Boynton and Elsie would have gotten along with each other very well.
