It is definitely not a Hollywood type of story. People are real, complicated and confused. It starts slowly and plainly, but quickly you are longing to know what will happen next. The end looks naturely but unexpected, and it also implies something, you may or may not see.

Good topic about how to ruin a life with false accusations. The village mentality is well presented in the quick condemnation.
No matter how the victim reacts he loses. I felt something missing from the movie. The acting was good but not credible.

Well written and acted drama on a case of false allegation of child sexual abuse. However, the story offered no new insight than others as "Witch Hunt, 2007," "A Map of the World, 1999," "Indictment: The McMartin Trial, 1995" etc. Also, the alternate ending is more controversial but fits title "The Hunt" better in mho. This is a 2012 Danish drama directed by Thomas Vinterberg.
The story is set in a small Danish village around Christmas, and follows a man who becomes the target of mass hysteria after being wrongly accused of sexually abusing a child in his kindergarten class.
Most people believe that children are innocent, but some are NOT.
The thing is, once you are labelled a bad man, the bad reputation may stay with you for years---if not forever.

This movie is absolutely chilling. I would agree with the other commenters about the actions of the school in this scenario, except in the special features the director is quite clear that though he used an amalgam of stories to create this vision, that it is based on real life occurrences where a child's story got taken quite out of hand. A young child has her little heart broken and mixes up what has happened in her life when talking to the school director. This leads to a poorly done investigation and seriously dangerous accusations against Jacob, a teacher at the school. Over time, you see quite a few friends and the entire town turn against him as more and more children also assert the same. The kicker comes with the scene where the cops go looking for the non-existent basement. Once again, Mads does a fantastic job and though he pulled most of my empathy, neither did I lose sympathy for those who were on the other side of the coin and simply upset that their children may have been violated. However, I was yelling at the screen more than a few times (call the POLICE!). So glad they changed the ending on this film, otherwise I'd have bawled for days. It was really well done. Watch the special features it if is available on your disk, it is really worth it.

Super movie that displays how someone can be convicted in the court of public opinion on just a whisper.

Absolutely agree with the comments on firefly5 (Jun 16, 2015).

Excellent movie. A subject that should be discussed. A child should be interviewed only by experts in this field! The teacher and others were giving her the impression that she should answer in a certain way. Even the mother told her what to say in a subtle manner. Usually children don't lie about this subject because they don't have the language skills to verbalize unless it has happened to them. In this movie it is shown how easily the child can be misled and a life destroyed!

*** SPOILER ALERT *** Suggest to read quotes after finished with the movie.

" ... It's common for children to describe non-existing details. I don't know if it's their imagination, or they pick it up from each other or from their parents. It's always assumed that children tell the truth. And unfortunately, very often they do." --- ONE YEAR LATER --- "Marcus, old boy. You have your hunting license. And it's your turn tomorrow at the crack of dawn. You're becoming an adult. You're about to conquer the forest. ..."

Klara: Dad, are you crying?
Theo: No. The world is full of evil. But if we hold on to each other, it goes away.
Klara: Are you really sad?
Theo: No. You know, that Lucas is my very best friend. We rode our mopeds... We stole apples and all that. I've told you before.
-Apparently, all the children are telling the same story. They describe your basement, the wallpaper, the colour of the sofa. But when the police searched your house this morning, they discovered what, Marcus?
Marcus: That we don't have a basement.
Marcus: What does that mean?
-That they don't have a basement!
