This is the true story of US Colonel David "Mickey" Marcus who helped with the establishment of the state of Israel against surmounting odds. The film boasts an incredible cast of the biggest stars of the day, aside from Kirk Douglas, the cast includes Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, Angie Dickinson, Yul Brynner, and Senta Berger. Mickey Marcus was charged with the task of making the newly formed Israeli force into a proper army. President Ben-Gurion appointed Marcus as "aluf," the first general to lead a Jewish army in two millennia. Col. David Marcus is buried at West Point, the only soldier buried there who died in combat under a flag other than that of America.

Just a plain old-fashioned pos.

Great story of the Jews fleeing the hatred of the Nazis only to find themselves hated by the Muslims.

A movie glorifying the period of history when Jews were moving into Palestine from Europe by the thousands, beginning the long process of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian Arabs who lived there. Naturally all sympathies live with the victors who earned the sympathy of the world by being holocausted by Germany and hated by all the other Christian nations. So when they ravaged the homes and lands of the people who possessed the land until then the 'free' world of Europe and America applauded. They'd rather have the Jews safely in the Middle East than in their own countries. That's the side of history this movie doesn't tell.

Factual, except for the romance, which may or may not be true. Great movie, but hard to understand unless one knows the history. I had to explain it to my wife.
