It might be tempting to dismiss this book as odd, weird, and little--because it is--but doing so would mean missing its substance and elegance. This is a book that revels in the magic of its oddness, embodying its appreciation of its characters' weirdness. Like them, it defies easy categorization due to its eclectic nature: It's a little bit of a character story, kind of a mystery, a touch magical allegory, characterized by realistic interpersonal dynamics and classroom setting, and a non-pedantic/-condescending/-preachy take on bullying. Young readers will find it relevant, relatable, respectful, validating, approachable, and entertaining.

At 149 pages with large text, this book is accessible to readers as young as 8 years old. This an ingenious book with Jennings' clever use of the letters "OWL" and his uniquely cool approach to bullying using a character as odd as Toulouse. Both Toulouse and Woodrow are unlikely yet likeable characters. Ages 8-10.
