"Ready Player One takes place in the not-so-distant future--the world has turned into a very bleak place, but luckily there is OASIS, a virtual reality world that is a vast online utopia. People can plug into OASIS to play, go to school, earn money, and even meet other people (or at least they can meet their avatars), and for protagonist Wade Watts it certainly beats passing the time in his grim, poverty-stricken real life. Along with millions of other world-wide citizens, Wade dreams of finding three keys left behind by James Halliday, the now-deceased creator of OASIS and the richest man to have ever lived. The keys are rumored to be hidden inside OASIS, and whoever finds them will inherit Halliday's fortune. But Halliday has not made it easy. And there are real dangers in this virtual world. Stuffed to the gills with action, puzzles, nerdy romance, and 80s nostalgia, this high energy cyber-quest will make geeks everywhere feel like they were separated at birth from author Ernest Cline."--Chris Schluep, Amazon Best Book of the Month.

Luv'd this book! A real page-turner. Appropriate for anyone 13 years and older. OK - maybe 17 and older (some of the language is a little coarse. ;-) A cleverly done "Hero's Tale". Futuristic while being 1980's nostalgic at the same time. (How does he do that?!) I hope Spielberg does a great job on the 'big showdown' at the 3rd gate. Seems like a ready-made scene for his particular talent.

As a grandmother I really didn't think I would enjoy this book. My kids were teenagers in the 80s so I had seen them play the games in the story. But I did like the book!! I was kept reading by the story and the game within a game. Hard to believe that only Wade could find the three keys, so was happy to see his friends get key two first. Sometimes I forgot if we were in the game or real life. I plan to watch the movies written about in the book again mainly "WarGames". I say read this book with an open mind and you will really enjoy it. And you don't have to be a gamer or a teenager to like it!

Amazing book.

It is a guaranteed amazing book, you will never read anything in your life as captivating or special as this book. It eventually will go down in the classics of teen literature.

Cline has created a fast paced attractive package of Computer Gaming for those of us who were never bitten by the bug. As a first Novel he slams a home run. Great pace, good voice, and exciting. Worthy read.

Spielberg directs the Movie, highly anticipated -

Cline has created a wonderfully detailed world and his descriptions of the OASIS make me want to jump right into it. Yes, the book is full of nostalgia but it's all well-researched and relevant to the story. Add great characters and you've got a heck of a read.

This kid is very poor and very alone. Being in this virtual world allows him to escape. He grows up in this society that is falling apart and only wants to find fortune. He stumbles upon his first clue into a puzzle everyone else has given up on. It leads into the most adventurous roller coaster of a lifetime, with plenty of retro 80's to go along with it.

mvkramer Sep 27, 2013

In 2044, reality is a grim place plagued by poverty, shortages and unemployment. Fortunately, people don't have to live in the real world anymore -- most entertainment, business and social interaction takes place in OASIS, a virtual world of amazing scope and detail. But now, OASIS will become the setting for an unprecedented battle royale. The creator of OASIS, upon his death, promised to give control of all his wealth, and his world, to the player who could complete a series of challenges based on his favorite movies and video games. For five years, nobody found anything...until Wade Watts, a 17-year-old, level-three nobody stumbles upon the first clue. Suddenly he's a celebrity with a shot at everything he's ever wanted -- but his opponents will stop at nothing, including murder, to see that he doesn't win.

An entertaining read about the 1980's "tech" looking back from 40 years in the future. Pacman, Atari 2600, and Journey are part of a quest through a completely virtual, all-encompassing universe.
