A beautiful short story by this nice author. I met Her once on a King Co. "Metro" Bus(She was going to get Her Car from a certain "Firestone" place).

I have enjoyed the previous J.P. Beaumont novels, but this little novella was disappointing. I could not get interested in Mr. Gurkey and I returned this book before I finished it.

This short novella, less than 100 pages, is a recent story that frames an incident from Beau's early days as a homicide detective. It's a very straightforward story, less "mystery" than most. Who done it is much less important here than why. It's a great setup for the rest of Beau's career, including all his marriages, his drinking, and how he beats his addiction. I like J.P. Beaumont a lot, so it would take a lot for Jance to disappoint me. This is a great device, to use her years of developing the character to go back and let us view him again at the beginning. I'm not a short fiction fan, but I liked this a lot.
