A great finale to the Broken Empire trilogy. Jorg has carved a path of murder and magic all the way to the old Imperial seat at Vyene to be crowned Emperor. His ambition was initially built on revenge, then twisted into proving himself to his father, then further twisted to rising to the top out of sheer spite for those who would say he couldn't (or shouldnt). On one hand, it almost felt out of character that Jorg slowly develops a sense of caring for his new family. The eager willingness for violence is still there, but some of the selfishness is sheared away by this book. The overall stakes are also higher in the fact that if Jorg does not become Emperor humanity will be eradicated. The end will either come by the 'surviving Builders' or that of the Dead King. Speaking of which, the end reveal of the Dead King was a bit of a let down. It felt like most of the set up for the reveal was only in this book, and the ending reveal rang a little hollow. Aside from that, it was a great ending. As other reviewers have said, I would have loved to see more to the story, but I understand that it had to end here. Fortunately, the Red Queen's War and the Book of the Ancestor series also take place in the same universe.

An excellent and appropriate ending to a great series. Although I loved this series and wish it could go on forever, I am glad that it ended here, and didn't continue on and diminish the series like many other series have.

A worthy end to an excellent series.

I really liked this entire trilogy.
The flashback style of narration made the story more chaotic and this worked for the atmosphere of the book. It is a dark tale with tormented characters and evil people. These are reasons why I liked it. It's hard to find a good book with a real evil antihero that I still like. And I found this in Jorg.
This was an interesting end to a great series and a great character.
