This mid-1980s Greg Bear tome didn't anticipate the breakup of the USSR half-decade later, but nevertheless it's a middling good science fiction read.

I liked this book a lot- it does have a lot of science, though, or at least scientific talk and concepts, so if you like lighter SF, this might not be for you. I raved about it to my mom, but she thought it was the weirdest book ever and could barely get through it.
