Through mesmerizing flashbacks, the story is told of Marian Washburn (Maureen O' Hara), a once-prominent singer who begins to lose her voice. To continue her unfulfilled dreams, she coaches Susan Caldwell (Gloria Grahame), a coarse and promiscuous singer, into the big time. But then Caldwell rebels against her mentor, and we soon learn that Caldwell has been shot. Even though Washburn confesses that she pulled the trigger, the murder and events leading up to it remain a baffling mystery and tantalizing entertainment!

This was the second film directed by Nicholas Ray (most famous films were They Live by Night, Rebel without a Cause, In a Lonely Place, and Johnny Guitar). It is what would be called a “B” film that while the package describes it as film noir, in reality only a few scenes are noirish. The remainder resembles a combination of soap opera, romance, and camp. I viewed it mainly because it includes significant scenes of Gloria Graham who I liked once I saw her acting in The Big Heat (after the completion of A Woman’s Secret, Graham and Ray would be married – the marriage did not last that long).

very odd movie for a noir. odd casting, Melvyn Douglas as a cafe piano player, Victor Jory as a mama's boy playboy.
