Astounding story. Loved every word

FindingJane May 12, 2015

Braden’s problems escalate quickly in this book, mainly because he keeps blundering into one problem after another. It’s frustrating to watch him making so many mistakes, some easily avoided.

He maintains suspicions but never against the right people. Being the school pariah means he’s lonely, angry and desperate to keep in contact with his friends who variously shun him for one reason or another. When he’s in difficulties he usually relies on his unpredictable magic to get him out of trouble, generally by winging it and not by any real plan. The descriptions for his magical abilities also remain rather unfathomable so that the reader has little clue exactly what’s happening when he utilizes them.

While the writing is good enough, drawing the reader into the narrow world of Belle Dam, the writer subverts his created literary landscape by rendering his subject matter unpalatable. Magic, it seems, only worsens matters, attracting dangerous enemies, alienating friends and opening the user to perilous, seductive forces. You wonder why anybody would bother with it.
