An adaptation of H. G. Wells's [The War of the Worlds] which is less credible in modern times, but held up well by special effects.

In a film like this, the aliens/special effects run the show. Sorry Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning (when she was annoying lol) it's just the truth. I don't even know why they bothered to act/overact.

Even Spielberg can have an off day. Or an off movie. This is one of those cases. The updating of the HG Wells classic about an alien invasion brings the action to the current day, and unfortunately makes much too liberal a use of the shaky cam style that seems so prevelent these days. The cast doesn't help. We're seeing the story mostly from the point of view of a family we don't particularly like. The father is a resentful jerk, and Tom Cruise is playing little more than Tom Cruise (it's all he's really capable of). He's stuck in his patented staring intently and running for his life phase, all the while wondering if he looks good (a common problem with the couch jumping lunatic). His teenaged son is mouthy and unpleasant. His daughter is prone to moments of catatonia (and screaming, lots and lots of screaming). Add to that plotholes sufficient enough to drive a train through and moments of throwing logic out the window, and you're left with a mess that's little more than a rapid case of PTSD.

Do you think that aliens taking over The Earth would make any more of a mess of this planet than we humans already have?_____ In spite of this remake's story having a decidedly "dysfunctional family" angle to it (I absolutely despised the 2 repulsive Ferrier children. And Tom Cruise as their father was a dink. And his ex-wife, just another breeding machine) - When it came to all of the exhilarating visual effects, this film was as breath-taking as a non-stop rollercoaster ride._____ Unfortunately War Of The Worlds ended with a whimper, rather than a bang, which muted the whole experience considerably.______ I can't believe that in their astounding quest to conquer The Earth these aliens (of supposedly superior intelligence) actually forgot to take care of one major detail - To wisely protect themselves against being infected by any of this planet's viruses, etc., etc._____ (Duh!)

Dreadful script, barely functional acting (it'd be a stretch to call what Tom Cruise does in this movie as "acting"), and worse: the special effects are awful.
I laughed my way through much of the film. Avoid at all costs even though one can check it out for free at SPL. (Otherwise, good for a nap or a long snooze).

Robbie Ferrier: What is it? Is it terrorists?

Ray Ferrier: These came from some place else.

Robbie Ferrier: What do you mean, like, Europe?

Ray Ferrier: No, Robbie, not like Europe!

Opening narrative: No one would have believed in the early years of the 21 st century that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own. That as men busied themselves about their various concerns, they observed and studied the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world. Yet, across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes and slowly and surely drew their plans against us ...
