A fantastic book! Timothy Egan describes his journeys in the Pacific Northwest through visits to salmon fisheries, redwood forests and the manicured English gardens of Vancouver. Here is a blend of history, anthropology and politics.

Timothy Egan's first book has a few rough spots, reading like a series of articles, with some repeated material. That said, it's truly wonderful, much more than a "regional" book. I grew up in Seattle, and learned NW history in school. After almost 30 years living elsewhere, I returned, and it's wonderful to see mountains and water in the same view. I've been reading early NW history again. Egan's stories, ecological viewpoint, and sense of humor are refreshing. He can be very passionate about the needs of the planet--I'd forgotten that this viewpoint began here as far back as 1990. I've read several of his later books, and will read the rest. Highly recommended.

A great book about the PWN written in the 1990's. Egan is a great writer. I think this an earlier book of his and it is a bit wordy. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the PNW history or terrain.

This continues to be one of my favorite books about the Northwest: combination history, travelogue, philosophizing, it evokes the sense of place that makes those of us native to the Rainylands of Cascadia unable to live elsewhere. For those just getting to know us, NW Native Egan guides them into the natural and human history that underlies us. Also, Tim Egan is a very good writer and this is one of the first books in which he truly displayed it. Enjoy!
