Beloved characters--and a brand new threat--prove that dragons will always be needed in the skies of Pern. The first Dragonriders of Pern novel in three years features McCaffrey's most popular characters: F'lar and Lessa, from the original trilogy, their son, F'lessan, and, of course, the dragons.

I'd heard that a movie or a cable TV series was going to be made on the Pern series...but I don't know if that's true. The last (Ninth) Pass will always be my favourite period of history in the Pern series, so was greatly saddened read that Anne McCaffrey died before she could finish writing the sequel to The Skies of Pern, as...somehow, the series felt incomplete to me.

In the previous book McCaffrey sold the Thread problem on the planet Pern. Now she uses her regal story telling skills to solve the problem "what next?"

By this point, about all the changes you can ring on the Pern situation have been done. The Abominators seem quite contrived: as a reader, you are almost thinking that it's too obvious someone is writing the script behind the scenes, manufacturing improbable dangers and disasters. When the fireball strikes, it's completely unbelievable. That aside, the characters and writing are pretty much as always (although she seems to have turned down the sex quite a bit).
