"Grace Alban has spent more than twenty years avoiding her childhood home, the stately Alban House on the shores of Lake Superior, for reasons she would rather forget. But when her mother's unexpected death brings Grace and her teenage daughter back, she finds more is haunting the halls and passageways of Alban House than her own personal demons. Long-buried family secrets, a packet of old love letters, and a lost manuscript plunge Grace into a decades-old mystery about a scandalous party at Alban House, when a world-famous author took his own life and Grace's aunt disappeared without a trace. The night has been shrouded in secrecy by the powerful Alban family for all of these years. Her mother intended to tell the truth about that night to a reporter on the very day she died--could it have been murder? Or was she a victim of the supposed Alban curse? Grace soon realizes her family secrets tangle and twist as darkly as the mansion's secret passages. With the help of the disarmingly kind-and attractive-Reverend Matthew Parker, Grace must uncover the truth about her home and its curse before she and her daughter become the next victims."-- P. This is the second time I read this book and the chill and suspense was even better. This was far better than her 1st and 3rd novels. Eagerly waiting for the latest one !!

Much better than her debut novel~The Tale of Halcyon Crane! Don't pass this one up!

This was an AWESOME ghost story/mystery with great twists and turns.Very hard to put down.I would have read it in one sitting if I hadn't become to sleepy to finish, after getting up early.

Skillful writing drew me into the descriptive scenes, and the characters were very well developed,as well.

No boring slow, spots with this book! Highly recommended for all who love a good clean,non-gory but suspenseful and spooky mystery.

Ultimately this was a blast to read and took me very little time to finish, and though a lot of the surprises felt telegraphed and I found the 'romance' to be forced and unnecessary, I did think that there was something very tongue-in-cheek in this book. It's a book that really knows its roots and doesn't stray from those roots very much, if at all. This 'homage' to the Gothic tales of the late 1700's and early 1800's reads like you could have plucked it straight from that time period, allowances of course made for the modern contrivances.

Despite the fact that there isn't really anything new going on here, it was still quite enjoyable and anyone who isn't really familiar with the Gothic novel pastiche would enjoy this as something new. Those who love their Gothic novels might find this a little tried-and-true but at the very least, serviceable.

Great book! Slow start but then it literally took off. Just when you thought the plot was revealed then another one was thrown at the reader.

Great read.. This book will make your hair stand and your skin crawl! If you're a big scaredy cat like me, you may want to give it a miss because you will get so hooked into the storyline and not be able to handle it. I was seriously spooked and even in broad daylight! However I loved the flow of writing, and the mystery and suspense. It gets 5 stars from me.
