As punishment for messing up a kidnap rescue and shooting a dog in the process, Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman is re-assigned to the newly created unsolved murder squad. Due to a manpower shortage her team is made up of veteran detectives brought back onto the police force, bringing a 1970's mentality to modern policing. The team's first case is to re-investigate a twenty year old murder conviction which has suddenly come into question due to police corruption. Sifting through the lies, dubious motives and the police cover up during the first investigation, the unorthodox methods of the dinosaur detectives eventually discover what really happened twenty years ago. In the process, the squad clears up two murders and an armed robbery.

Series goes against the Hollywood grains of young beautiful & cheap actors in hip settings with mostly veteran actors in plain old UK.
Slyly made fun of police, senior citizens & leadership.
Grim & humor applied equally.
Unlikely contender for family viewing.
Yes, the entire series 1-12 may be cheesy, but the offbeat writing, chemistry & camaraderie is there.

Love this series - love the characters, the acting, and the writing. Focussed on the police work, but gives us enough of the characters' personal lives to round them out. It's obvious that everyone on the show likes each other and enjoys doing it. One of my favourite Brit mystery series.

Tries too hard.

Often delightful, clever, funny series from the BBC. But too often vulgar, silly and preachy. Characters are stereotyped, acting is overdone, can be roll-your-eyes tedious.

Best line: "[Orwell's] Big Brother isn't a warning from history, it's a game show.'

I love this series! I have watched various episodes on telly over the years and finally decided to watch the whole series from the beginning. The crimes are not what I find the most interesting, it's the chemistry of the team, they are all so different so there are a lot of disagreements and bickering which of course makes for good comedy. The show is great for people of any age, you don't have to be an old codger to enjoy it, I'm certainly not. Now I'm off to check out season 3!

A good mix of murder mystery and comedy, and whoever wrote the scripts has the fine talent of knowing when to interject the comic lines. The guys under beautiful Ins. Sandra Pullman are older men (but not too old) who verge on being total odd balls--they hall have their quirks but they're funny to watch. Actors play off each other extraordinarily well. Found this series absolutely delightful!
