Very solid and gritty exploitation movie reminicicent of films from the 60s and 70s. Probably could have been one of Tarantino's grindhouse classics that he revels in. Mel Gibson gives a solid performance as a lone American put into a large Mexican prison which resembles a working village of inmates and familes. Watching Gibson navigate all the forces and many shootouts to get his loot back and escape is surprisingly entertaining. The real star of the film is the prison itself which is a triumph in production design of how realistic and believable scary the place appears.

Girl friend said it was pretty good, a 4 star. I don't know because I was tired and fell asleep. But what I did see was good.

The movie has Mexican cultural elements which are not noted in the screenplay. We often see the Virgin of Guadalupe, but the boy actually visits the Santa Muerte altar.
The story of Pancho Villa's gun and the hole in the ceiling of the Opera Bar is true-ish. The Opera Bar is an expensive restaurant in downtown Mexico City, and it definitely has a bullet hole in the ceiling.
There are versions of the story of how it got there. (Did Villa ride in on his horse?) Villa met Emiliano Zapata in the city but that famous photographed meeting occurred in the San Angel neighbourhood to the southwest of the centre.
The actor who plays Javi is an important and very versatile one in Mexico. The actor portraying Caracas also has a long career. The surgeon had a role on the TV programme "House", where he played the father of the Australian doctor.

An entertaining movie. The story was decent and Mel is getting old, but he held up well in the movie, so it worked. Some good action sequences and some nice plot twists.

seems to become redundant somewhere along there.

It's only my opinion, but you will most likely enjoy this DVD. My personal feeling, Rent it..

I thought the creation of the prison world, which is perhaps unlike any other seen on film, was well executed. However, about half-way through, the plot becomes predictable and the end is simply too formulaic for my taste.

This movie was DYNAMITE - although it may be too violent for younger viewers. It's even somewhat original for an action flick. Oh, and a great soundtrack. 4/5 stars.
