In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family. Their long dream is realized when the hated Shah is defeated in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, Marji grows up to witnesses first hand how the new Iran has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study. This change proves an equally difficult trial for Marji and finds herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her. Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and her homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.

An animated film based on the Persepolis books, that perfectly captures the beauty and horrors of Satrapi's art and story.

Loved the graphic novels and this movie delivers! So worth watching whether you have read the books or not.

We all share the same human traits, yet their is such sadness in how some beliefs cower to control our humane rights and emotions. As is the norm, a youth commences with a positive attitude only to be eventually eroded with oppression. Sadly, this appears to happen in every corner of the world we live in. Perhaps, one might ask, how can we better serve our youth, as well as ourselves, to have a more enjoyable, positive existence, in the walk of our life?

It is full of culture, history and humanity. It is a quick and visual way to learn about Iran modern history. It may answer some of your whys in mind.

It's a good movie and esp if you know the french language - the nuances and history. If not a lesson for sure - makes you feel involved and the making should be seen to better understand it too.

Extraordinary overview of the causes of modern political strife in Iran, told by a coming of age young girls point of view. A great bridge for recognizing our common humanity. I hope writers around the world will take note of this genre and produce like work for sharing the truth of divisive causes, whatever they be. Not for small children.

I really liked this movie! The art was really cool and though the story was depressing, I could understand the girl's struggle in this new environment. Some parts had me confused because I had to pay attention to the subtitles.

French bias here: French directors can start movies but they have not learned how to finish them. It is obvious that Marj is far from being a poor Iranian as she leaves Iran by air to Vienna whenever the political heat is on and returns when it is off on visa and cash courtesy of her father. Papa must have a lot of political juice as well as money. Old_Toto wishes he could leave for Vienna or Paris. In any case, it was interesting to see the modern history of Iran through the eyes of a pouty faced, maturing female where females are subordinate to all other classes of males.

The overall tone of the movie was more depressing than I expected and it ended a bit too soon. But the art direction was amazing, the lead character Marjane was charming, and it was fascinating to watch her perspective of the Islamic Revolution unfold. This being a true story only makes it even better. (Review originally published on my Rotten Tomatoes account.)
