Two determined California college students, Arian and Ernest, follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley, and attempt to do something important with their lives. The two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan. Dr. Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as Arian and Ernest fight for survival in the field and the human consequences of war becomes clear for these two students trapped behind enemy lines. They become the string that binds together the two opposite sides of America. In California, the anguished Dr. Malley attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student who is the very opposite of Arian and Ernest. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic presidential hopeful, Senator Jasper Irving, is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist that just might affect Arian and Ernest's fates.

Another movie with a slew of known actors that couldn't carry the film. Just a bunch of words back and forth and doors opening and closing after scenes. Didn't care for the movie, found the characters wanted to show shallowness, greed and control. I felt more stress than enjoyment of watching good talent.

I'm not sure it succeeded, but I'm glad it tried. The actors are very well cast, the premise is heavy stuff, the ending is unexpected.

Three sets of persuasive perspectives on the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan as of 2007 when the film was released. It is 2018 now, and the US military are still at it while the public/press/politicians/generals are as divided on US/NATO strategy in Afghanistan, more than 16 years after the war started. A huge money pit for our tax dollars not to mention the misery the war has scarred humanity. A good watch while waiting for "The Looming Tower 2018."

Three stories are told in this movie. One is the consequences of war, another is the consequence of not fully applying oneself to a commitment to college and the other story is between an ambitious senator and a journalist with morals. I found it very interesting but did wish that the movie would stay a little longer on some of the story and a little less on other parts. Great acting. Tom Cruise is perfect as the senator. Meryl Streep is a great journalist, Robert Redford as always, is wonderful and Andrew Garfield is perfect as the arrogant and slightly smart-alecky student.

A movie worth a watch. Nothing great, but it does provide a somewhat different look at one of the ways we might view our lives.

The professor pontificates, the reporter is a wimp, the soldiers get killed because of bad intel. Cruise is actually perfect in his role, because he is just mouthing words other people have prepared. His part is the most interesting because it points out how well politicians work with rhetoric, rather than facts or meaning, to present an image and deflect analysis.

The movie portrays the intersection of war with media, politics, and education. It depicts engagement, involvement, and personal responsibility(or lack of) in world events. The lack of "essence of character has allowed the nation to become apathetic".

Watchable but I'm not sure what this movie tried to be. The dialogue sounded forced especially by Robert Redford. Cruise seemed miscast in the picture as well. It's basically a commentary on U.S. foreign policy and what America "should" stand up for. Roger Ebert gave this one 2.5 stars.

Good ones in IMDb already, thanks to the contributors:

This exchange is partially quoted in imdb:

Afghan terrain demands that small specialized teams establish forward operating points.
-I've heard of "forward operating bases," but not "forward operating points." "Point" sounds smaller than "base."
Because it is. What? Just, come on, say it.
-Sorry, no. I just... It also sounds like Pentagonese for "bait."
Janine. It's not like we're putting one or two guys on the mountain here. All right? But small is how we fight now.
-Says the man in the air-conditioned room.
This is a fight that we're in. And, unfortunately, civilizations do not sustain themselves through non-violent responses.
-What does that mean? Are you going to now forgo diplomacy and State Department treaties, too?
We were attacked. You do not respond to an attack with diplomacy. Bin Laden's idea of diplomacy is not filming the beheadings.
