I've seen quite a few versions of Miss Marple, and so far, I think Joan Hickson is the best Miss Marple of them all. Her portrayal is subtle and very much on the quiet side ... and I'm sure Agatha Christie has a quiet, observant type of person in mind, when she wrote these mysteries.

Perfectly entertaining but the accents are a bit thick in these versions with Joan Hickson. I have to say, however, she seems to be the perfect Miss Marple!!

You will notice the title of this series: Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. This is literally the case. Dame Agatha and Joan Hickson met when Ms. Hickson was a relatively young woman, and she chose her as an ideal, future Miss Marple. This turns out to be an authentic, seemingly distracted and class-conscious old lady, with a cool, steel trap mind. As well, the screenwriters stick close to the original stories, and minimize camp and melodrama. For those who like rewritten stories (sometimes to make them more "interesting", sometimes for no particular reason) and overacting, there's always MARPLE.

Amazing collection! Joan Hickson (so far) has been the only actress to portray Miss Marple in all her stories. A Murder Is Announced was a particular favourite. The author Bowen of these teleplays had a great ability to take a novel or short story and turn it into a film. Very judicious choices. Great series. Thank you, Joan.
