Murder, mayhem and magic. Locked in a coffin-like darkness, there is nothing to distract me from my memories of killing Reyad. He deserved to die but according to the law, so do I. Here in Ixia, the punishment for murder is death. And now I wait for the hangman's noose. But the same law that condemns me may also save me. Ixia's food taster chosen to ensure that the Commander's food is not poisoned has died. And by law, the next prisoner who is scheduled to be executed me must be offered the position.

Review excerpt: "If we weren’t in the midst of a global pandemic and all its concomitant ills, I would have listed at least 20 more effusive reasons why I love this book, but all of them would have been spoilers. That I can put fingers to keyboard at all when it feels like the world is falling down around me is testament itself to the power of this book to make me believe that things will be okay. If you’re in need of being in a different time and space with people who make good decisions when faced with bad things, then come join me and Yelena in Ixia."

I became obsessed with this book and it's been a long time since I've been pulled into a whole new world like this. I loved how the romance in the book was subtle and the storyline focused more on character development, suspense, and even humor! I finished it in less than a week and I haven't read that fast in over 10 years! I already requested the second book to be placed on hold and can't wait to hear what else is in line for Yelena. From the summaries and reviews online, it looks like it'll get even better!

This book was definitely a really refreshing story. If you enjoyed Percy Jackson or Harry Potter, then this book is by far for you. There is definitely a romantic twist at the end, which helps me look forward to the next books in the series. Some of the characters are definitely sinister (like Lord Voldemort) but others can be more compared to Harry Potter. I definitely recommend this book for anybody who really wants to read a suspense novel.
~It's a really fascinating novel and keeps you up late at night. :)

In this light and fluffy fantasy/romance novel, a young abused orphan girl suffers greatly before discovering her true powers and possibly her true love. This is a fun fast-paced romp featuring strong female characters, but be prepared to switch off much of your common sense and ignore the many crater-sized plot holes.

Set in a fascinating fantasy setting after a military coup, Yelena has been sentenced to death - *gasp* - but fear not, as at the last moment she is offered instead the role of poison tester for the Commander! Full of intrigue, characters with a pleasing level of sass, and magic, this book is a must-read for any fantasy bookaholic, and is my absolute favourite series.

Loved this book. A little sceptical at first but I ended up not being able to put it down. I continued to read the rest of the series!!!

Although I found this book in the library's Adult Sci Fi/Fantasy section, it had a very Young Adult feel to it, for the most part. However, there are a few places where I was reminded that this is an adult-level book. There's no explicit sex in the book, but it's clear from the text that they do have sex. Also, since Valek is an assassin and a spy, there's an above-average amount of killing in the book. Add to that the fact that one of the main characters had been raped (prior to the events in the book), and the psychological torture committed on one of the characters, and this is possibly a bit too adult a book for young teens.
Of course, this was right up my alley - not the rape and torture and maiming and killing, but the magic and swords and whatnot. Yelena, condemned to be executed for murdering the son of her benefactor, is given the opportunity by Valek to become the food taster for the Commander, the country's leader. Since plots and intrigues abound, there is a very real chance that she will be poisoned, so by saying yes, she may have only postponed her death. Working for Valek, she is soon caught up in all the aforementioned plots and intrigues, while also trying to avoid attempts on her own life by people hired by her former benefactor. Add some magicians, some nasty-sounding spiders, a snow cat or two, and it's pretty exciting stuff

This is the first book in a rather addictive series. Yelena is waiting for her death sentence to be carried out, when she is offered a choice: die via her sentence, or become the poison taster of the palace. She chooses the latter, but she still has many more threats against her life. This book has all the things! Magic, adventure, sword fighting, a mounting rebellion, and a touch of romance.

My choice was to be someplace where my life wasn’t in danger. My choice was to be where I didn’t have an assassin for a boss, and some unknown person trying to make my already intense life even more complicated. My choice was freedom.

I took a couple of deep breaths and cleared the distressing thoughts of my upcoming trip . . . from my mind. Rubbing my hands along the bow, I concentrated instead on the smooth solidness of the weapon. I hefted it in my grip, trying to make a connection, creating an extension of my thoughts through the bow.
A light vibration tingled through my fingertips as I traced the wood grain. My consciousness flowed through the bow, twisting and turning along the grain, and back along my arm. I possessed the bow and my body at the same time.

"Yelena, you've driven me crazy. You've caused me considerable trouble and I've contemplated ending your life twice since I've known you." Valek's warm break in my ear sent a shiver down my spine...
