This is a great book if you want to write something that will sell. I've been writing for 30 years and have never sold anything to a major publisher or publication. This book was just the bare essentials- how to make a story palatable to the general public and write for readers. For example, I'd never used Flesch Kincaid on my own writing, although as a secretary I would use the WP feature. Now I am going to use it on every manuscript.

Great book!

This is a Writer’s Digest book, which means it will not inspire or thrill you. Essentially, it’s a compendium of checklists. Helpful, I suppose, but underwhelming. The author relies too much, I think, on mechanical gadgetry -- Flesch reading ease scores, syllable counts, word counts, and so on -- as suggestions to improve your writing.
