From the acclaimed author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, a moving new novel that subtly reimagines our world and time in a haunting story of friendship and love.

As a child, Kathy-now thirty-one years old-lived at Hailsham, a private school in the scenic English countryside where the children were sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe that they were special and that their well-being was crucial not only for themselves but for the society they would eventually enter. Kathy had long ago put this idyllic past behind her, but when two of her Hailsham friends come back into her life, she stops resisting the pull of memory.

And so, as her friendship with Ruth is rekindled, and as the feelings that long ago fueled her adolescent crush on Tommy begin to deepen into love, Kathy recalls their years at Hailsham. She describes happy scenes of boys and girls growing up together, unperturbed-even comforted-by their isolation. But she describes other scenes as well: of discord and misunderstanding that hint at a dark secret behind Hailsham's nurturing facade. With the dawning clarity of hindsight, the three friends are compelled to face the truth about their childhood-and about their lives now.

A tale of deceptive simplicity, Never Let Me Go slowly reveals an extraordinary emotional depth and resonance-and takes its place among Kazuo Ishiguro's finest work.

Never let me go is a very tragic but touching book. In the story there are three friends Kathy, Tommy and Ruth who are raised in a boarding school for future donors. The book fast forwards to when Kathy is now grown up and a carer for people like her who are clones and need to start donating. Throughout the story the friends go through some major ups and downs while living their life in their boarding school, Hailsham. The book is full of friendships, sadness and important lessons and is a great book for high schoolers to read.

Like everything I've read of Ishiguro's, this one has stayed with me years after I first read it. Heartbreaking, utterly believable and yet so imaginative.

A thoughtful reflection on what it means to be human, the importance of relationships, and the small ways we find meaning in life, painted across an unsuspecting, darker landscape reminiscent of our own fates...

Never Let Me Go tugs at your heart. You know the inevitable fate of Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. But you keep expecting that a miracle would happen. That they deserve a chance at a life better than the one planned for them.

I literally had no idea what this book was about. I just took it on vacation with me. I think I had won it from Goodreads ages ago and never gotten around to it. A subtle love story with a twist. It was written so well and has stuck with me since I finished it. It definitely deserves a re-read. I have no interest in seeing the movie, though.

Very moving story of commitment and loss, with a powerful statement of what it means to be human.

Then he said: "I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how I think it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever."

“Because maybe, in a way, we didn't leave it behind nearly as much as we might once have thought. Because somewhere underneath, a part of us stayed like that: fearful of the world around us, and no matter how much we despised ourselves for it--unable quite to let each other go.”
― Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go
